Thanks for responding Bruce and Sabine. I guess the reason I wanted someone in Chicago was so I could get a better sense of the people I would be dealing with as well as to include them in on our project discussions. We have some big plans (3-4 web sites redesigned with cross integration between sites using MIVA and WordPress) and I want our designer/developer to be a part of the family, not just some pixelated human abstraction. ;)
I'm not sure if that makes sense but if you can argue the advantages of working off site, I'm open.

I can't argue with the in-person aspect. Most of our clients are not local - we are generally accessible via email/phone/Skype, and/or whatever other communication method you prefer ;) You will receive a dedicated project manager who picks up the phone to talk to you when you call. I'd be more than happy to provide client references - however, we are STILL not located in IL ;)
We have pictures of our staff posted on our site - does that help some? Facetime? Anyhow - it's your choice of course, and I can understand that local might be preferred.
Best - Sabine
I am interested in hearing more about your 2 ecom projects and 1 non ecom. I am in the west suburbs and can travel to your office. Please take a look at my portfolio website, eleven82.com, and feel free to contact me if interested.
We are San Diego based design firm. We have done many big projects and almost 2 dozens of modules in Miva Merchant. We have a team of miva professionals here, so we can handle multiple projects at a time.
Please send me your Miva Merchant and non miva merchant (magento, wordpress or any other) site requirement to my email.
Let us know, if we can help you to make this project successful.
