Processing Donations in a Simplified Checkout

I'm trying to simplify the way donations are handled on our website.

Our former webmaster set up Miva for our store orders and donations. You can see it in action here: http://store.3abn.org/merchant2/merc..._Code=FEATURED

Currently donations to our nonprofit organization are handled the same as product orders: They go into the basket, where for example, a $50 donation would appear at 50 units of $1 donation towards a particular area that users can choose. If anyone wants to order CDs, books, DVDs, etc., those appear alongside the donation(s) in the shopping cart.

To me this seems like a very awkward way to handle donations. Users have complained about the complexity of it. Obviously we want to make this as simple as possible: Put in how much money you want, what project you want to support, enter your billing info and card number, and process. The cart system does not seem necessary. I'm wondering if there is a way to separate out the donation system from the product ordering system, and make it easier to do.

ANY suggestions would be much appreciated.

I am new to the Miva system, but am trying to learn it. I've already made some small changes to the store, and am comfortable with it, for the little I've done. But there is still a lot of unfamiliar territory.

Do you only accept donations or do you also sell shippable products?

We do both. People can donate only, order shippable items only, or both. Being able to do both is nice, but if necessary I would sacrifice that for a simplified donation process.

Sorry, you're still being moderated until you hit 3 posts, that's why the post was delayed.

You can use this module to change it from 50 $1 units, to an actual $50 donation (or any input amount): http://www.mivacentral.com/Merchant2...=WCW-EXTERNAL5

Also you can make the shipping fields hidden and just assume that the billing address is the shipping address to streamline the checkout.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about for an existing Donation customer: https://giving.safeharbor.us/mm5/mer...vc?Screen=DNAT

So the way I'm assuming that would work, is that this module will let the administrator give some products (in this case, a donation) a user-definable price. Then, during the checkout process, some conditional logic can be applied, and if the only item in the cart is a donation, then the shipping fields can be hidden, etc.

            Your assumptions are exactly correct.
