Can I have some more clarification on how the new module handles Inventory Kits and Variants, specifically how these links are displayed for the customer and what data we can include?

With our current downloads module, there is a field for the file path and a field for the download description. On the INVC page and on their Receipt Email, a product made with inventory kits will display the Parent Products name, then list the Download Description of the Kit Parts below that (the Download Description is a link to the download file).
It would looks something like this:
    Parent Product
    Variant Part 1
    Variant Part 2
    Variant Part 3

I have read through the documentation (http://docs.miva.com/v1.0/docs/digital-download), and can't tell how Miva Downloads will handle this. In the documentation, I see a place for the file name and the file path, but no user-friendly download description. The example shown in the documentation is only for 1 product with 1 download link, and it has the product name followed by the bare download URL. It is easy enough to make the product name be a link in that particular case (1 product with 1 download), but I am unable to tell how that will translate when there is a long list of links for Variant Parts.

Our current template loops through the "item:options" array for each Parent Product, and the Variant Parts are in this array and are displayed with the description and link ( for example <a href="link">description</a>).

Are the template changes documented somewhere?

The digital downloads functionality does support kits. You can add any number of part products to a kit and when purchased Miva will output a link for each one (one link per row) By default it is just going to say "Digital Download" which would be a link to the file. There is not currently a place to include a description. It would be possible to store the description in a custom product field on the part/variant product which can be pulled into the page.

Let me see if I can come up with some sample code for you.

Would it be easier to pull a custom product field into the page, or the part/variant product's name?

We have been using the eMedia Softgoods module for the last 5 years or so and apparently version 5.019 works with Miva 9.0 but it will need an upgrade before it will work with 9.5. We bought the module before they started the monthly subscription fee.

There is no way we could continue offering downloads if we had to pay the monthly fee.

I understand that Miva now offers a Digital Download module, however, the only option to host files outside of our website is Amazon Simple Storage. We currently host our files on RackSpace which has worked flawlessly for us. We have about 50 GB stored made up of 172 files and don’t sell more than 5 GBs of download a month.

Changing to Miva’s new Digital Download module would take our store offline while the new downloads were set up, plus it would be a huge task to re-upload all the files currently on RackSpace, to a new server. I can't begin to think of the cost that Amazon may charge - I haven't been able to figure out their

Would it be possible to request that Miva include RackSpace as another option for content storage options?

We're looking at adding Rackspace (is it was in the original plan) but they don't offer a sandbox for testing, so for now that's scrapped.
            Thanks,

Our online store currently stores our downloadable files in the cloud files section of Rackspace. I have just been in contact with Rackspace and they said that to test their servers, all you need to do is to upload some files to their site and then test them. There is no need for a sandbox.

Can someone from Miva contact Rackspace and find a way to make this work with the new Digital Downloads feature in Miva?

Rackspace's comment to me: "We have servers you can create as well as you creating containers in Cloud files."

kwi_sky Amazon has a cost calculator that's easy to use. 50 GB of storage and 5 GB of download bandwidth works out to $1.35 per month. Yes, AWS is really cheap. Uploading the files to AWS is easy and painless. Changing the product set up, though, would be time consuming. But there is no reason you would need to go offline. Upload all your files to AWS first. Make all your digital products temporarily unavailable in your store, and then reenable them one at a time as you complete the new Miva digital download fields.

Thanks MIVA team for the resent additional features for Digital Download. I have a couple of questions. 1. It looks like we can use our own dedicated server now to store the files? 2. Can a download code be automatically generated when someone orders the product? 3. Can I generate a code for a customer manually? ( this is important as sometimes peoples codes sometime time out and they need a new one).

                    1. The files can either be stored on your Miva Server on up on Amazon using S3.

                    2. The link the the download file is automatically generated when the order is placed and inserted as an attribute. There is also a separate digital download email you can configure to send when the digital download is purchased.

                    3. Yes in the admin you can go to a digital download product and generate a code manually to download the file. You will then need to email it to the customer.

That all looks good except our files are not on the MIVA server and that would be way to expensive to do. They are on a dedicated 250 gig server which costs very little a month. Do you have plans for supporting this in the future. Its a feature of the emediaSales module.

I would checkout out Amazon S3, their pricing is very competitive.

I know but I have a hard time trusting big companies. They like to start programs and then change them for the worse of even discontinues services at will. Seen it over and over.

Normally I agree with your sentiment, but the odds of the price of storage at Amazon S3 going up are so close to zero it's hard to fathom. Amazon's model is to win on price and storage gets cheaper over time.
                            Thanks,

Has Rackspace been added yet to your list of places to store files for downloading?

If I have to move the 50 GB of products, how do you suggest I move from one site to another. It would be very time consuming to locate all the CDs with these files on, in our office and upload them individually. I would really like to stay where we are. Isn't there a way you can just link to where we already have the files stored?

We just received an charge for not being up to date with upgrades on Miva. This came at a very busy time for me as I will need to add this onto my already heavy workload.

Isn't there some way for you to allow me to link to Rackspace? I don't even begin to know how to move these files.

No Rackspace has not yet been added and until they offer a Dev Sandbox, likely will not be.
                                Thanks,
