Connecting additional images to options in a drop down menu.

So I'm doing a completely new site CSSU, and looking at some very necessary changes to modernize my site. We have images for lots of the colors we do, but currently these aren't connected to any of the choices in the Drop-Down menu.
What I'd like to do is have the correct drop down option automatically select when you click the corresponding image on below the main picture. I'd also like the corresponding picture to show when the customer selects the drop down option. How can I make this work?

    My second question is related
I've played around with the Inventory Variants options and it looks like it might have something to do with it but I have to turn "on" inventory to use variants.

I have no need to track inventory, we're a manufacturer and making up a retail quantity of any item takes a couple days at the most, I have no need for it every to give a "sold out" message to a customer.
Will I have to use Inventory and just put in a ridiculous quantity for each variant?

Here is a video on swatches (it is using Miva 5.5 but the concepts are the same)

Yes you do need the set to on to use inventory variants. The does not mean you are actually tracking inventory though. If you have inventory turned off globally, you can still have this setting set to on with having to actually track inventory.

I'd like do do it without having a separate color swatch image, is that possible (just connect main images to the drop down)?

Also I don't track globally, when I tried to setup inventory variants, it got a "sold out" message on the page I was working in the dev site, is the only solution to put like 100,000 as the quantity I have?.
