Read Product Custom Field to Set Shipping Rule on Product?

I would like to dynamically set a particular shipping rule on a collection of products using the read/write function. Is that possible?

Or is it possible to set a particular shipping rule using a custom field?

I know I can set the shipping method by doing an import, that's no problem. However, for setting up new products down the road, the number of steps involved is always growing thanks to new features in the software. Would like to program anything I can to make setting up new products as painless as possible. Using the custom fields and the read/write function has been really useful for this.

No, shipping rules will been to be setup at the product level in the admin (or import) what is the rule you're trying to apply, their may be an easier method.
