in attribute option names can I use special characters like a trademark symbol? Do I need to specify a certain character set like utf-8? ♥

Just use the encoded name for these. i.e., ™ ®, etcBruce Golub

Support said (and it worked for me):
"I did confirm that you cannot use HTML special characters in a products Title or Attribute prompt now. However, you can use alt codes for the same affect:
Example from my dev store:" http://puu.sh/p5JNx/e0f65d41bc.jpg

Not sure what you are stating here. You can use HTML encoded symbols for things like Trademark (™), Registered (®), etc. Unless this is some restricted by the ReadyTheme (can't imagine how), but we've used this for years.Bruce Golub
