The information in this article was derived from “The Million-Dollar, One-Person Business” by Elaine Pofeldt, Contributor to Forbes.com.

If you are thinking of starting your own business, you may be worrying about overhead costs, hiring and managing employees, bills, and startup costs.  You also might be wondering how much you could make if your business really takes off.  These statistics about successful entrepreneurs may inspire you to think bigger.  A million dollars bigger.

Ecommerce gives you the opportunity to run a global corporation.  By opening an online store for a new idea or an existing brick-and-mortar store, you can expand your reach and have a better chance of building a lucrative business, without the hassle of overhead costs, hiring, firing, and other bills.  The beauty of an online business is that it opens up the world of the million dollar, one-person business.

Forbes Researcher, Elaine Pofeldt, determined which types of businesses were being represented in each revenue tier.  The U.S. Census Bureau recently released these statistics about non-employer firms.

The number of million dollar, one-person businesses are on the rise:

  • 1.6 million owners rang up sales in the $100,000 to $249,999 range (up from 1.5 million in 2010).
  • 484, 479 had sales from $250,000 to $499,999 (up from 453,694 in 2010).
  • 209,415 had sales between $500,000 to $999,999 (up from 198,755 in 2010).
  • 26,744 had sales between $1 million and $2.49 million (up from 24,945 in 2010).

  • Among all 50 states, 48 saw increases in one-person ventures from 2010-2011.

In 2011, the average revenue of the 22.5 million non-employer firms was $44,000.  That’s around the average wage in the U.S., which is $45,790.  Most of the businesses in this study are sole proprietorships, and a substantial amount of them have broken the $1 million mark. If they can do it, why can’t you?
