Miva Intern, Shea Green, a bright young woman from Las Cruces, New Mexico masters her first professional tech industry job – at 17.
It was her first internship, and her first day on the job in a fast-paced professional workplace.
“Coming into a new environment not knowing anyone and only being 17 was hard, but I found my place quickly and the staff has been awesome.”
Upon the recommendation of a family friend, Shea dedicated a month of her summer to full-time work as a marketing and technology intern at Miva. Immediately faced with the deadlines and demands associated with an ecommerce company that has tens of thousands of clients and a hand in processing more than 100 billion dollars in online orders, Shea swiftly learned the importance of time management in a professional setting.
“This internship has taught me to get things done and do them well with a time crunch,” says Shea. For anyone who works in ecommerce, this may be an understatement. But Shea also found the camaraderie and support of a workplace with more than 100 employees to be a constant source of guidance – and fun. Whenever she had a question, “their doors were always open.”
Shea came to Miva with a slate of impressive accolades already under her belt. In addition to a strong academic record and membership in the National Honor Society and Key Club, Shea has excelled in leadership programs sponsored by the Las Cruces and Hispano Chambers of Commerce, and has shown excellent journalistic flair, as a member of the member of National Association of Black Journalists. Shea is also a talented classically trained dancer, having already been a full chamber member of the Las Cruces Chamber Ballet for 4 years. All of these skills combine to make Shea a vibrant and thoughtful contributor in the workplace.
In partnership with Miva team members from various departments, Shea helped design marketing email campaigns with professional software, built insightful analytical reports, and lent her fresh point of view to social media campaigns. Ecommerce and technology fields place a premium on new energy and new ideas – an industry-wide truism which allowed Shea to thrive at Miva.
While she may already have several years’ professional head start on her peers, like every 17-year old Shea is still exploring her many options in life. With college still ahead of her, Shea is concentrating on what she’d like to study and what type of career she’d like to pursue. Her internship with Miva has not only given her a great first entry for her developing pro resume, it has also helped her to clarify some of the big questions which lay ahead.
“I really feel like this experience has really allowed me to grow as a young woman,” Shea says. “I have learned what it means to be professional.”
