Review Baskets - Many, many empty baskets

What triggers baskets to be added to abandoned baskets available for review under Review Baskets? Some days there are a larger number, with no items and no customer. I understand a customer may not be logged in, and could add to basket and then remove, then leave the store. But seems unlikely on some days. One day had 2000.

Typically is bots or web crawlers. Miva creates a basket on each page hit, unless a cookie exists which crawlers cannot use.

I would suggest you update the site to use deferred baskets. This feature was added to address this exact issue. A basket is not created in Miva until it is actually needed:
