Attribute Swatch Swap Images with multiple product thumbnails

Maybe I'm over thinking this or maybe it's not doable but I'm trying to achieve something like this site has:

There are the swatch colors that link to images that swap out when clicked but there are also thumbnail images that are independent of the swatch-swap images. In other words when you click on a swatch-swap to change the color of product, the thumbnails do not change. Is it a matter of assigning all the images to the Inventory Variants and just making sure the image that is supposed to swap is assigned as the Main Image Type (to fake the system out)?

Okay, I was wrong about just assigning all the images to each Inventory Variant - if one of the images isn't a variant then it seems to get confused.
