    almost Friday

    Just for your amusement:

I just had a customer who bought my module including the installation
option, and when I asked for the login information, I found out that he did
not have any Miva Merchant, and did not even know what it is :)

Frankly told, after the email exchange, I was in fact positively surprised
that he already had a server :)

Considering the day I have had today - I needed the laugh. I'm sorry it was
    at someone else's expense.

        Oh GOODIE...Its a "I have a moron client rant time...here's mine:

Client asks for custom coding for a licensing module...we bid, he accepts,
deposits his 50%, we build, test, ta da! We're done...right....well no. See
client doesn't no Merchant from his back end, so he asks us how much to
integrate a basic site design, configure out and otherwise launch the site.
We tell him...says, nah he'll figure it out himself. Ok, fine, no big
deal...not like we need the work, so here's the final bill. Wait a week,
send reminder. And again. Finally put his feet to the fire and he has the
gaul to say he's not paying UNTIL HE FINISHES the his site build out (so he
can see the process all the way through). (Note: we setup the site with
simple validation to SHOW HIM it works all the way through.)

So, I guess tomorrow we flip off the license for the software. (Good thing
we always put licensing code in custom work)

        ...thanks for letting me vent

        -Bruce

OHHHH - now that lends itself to the perfect developers module. Is it
possible to develop a module that works as switch like what Bruce
mentioned for those of use who develop/integrate stores and then get
stiffed? Sort of like a final key that gets delivered upon final payment?
Something that would shut the entire store down?

Yea, its called a license<G>...naw, you can't (ok, you can, but shouldn't)
install "backdoor bombs." They are illegial in most cases. You CAN license
your OWN software and turnoff the license for non-payment (and make sure
that is stated in the licensing terms). But you can't disable software, even
for non-payment, that is not yours.

Yeah - I understand - a trial version of software is a whole piece of
something owned in it's entirety by the developer. Where what I do would
just be labor - if I were a repair shop I could issue a mechanics lien -
or at least not let them have the car until they paid me for it. And even
if I purchased other developers software - it's still not "my" software to
pull the plug on. Oh well, it sure would be nice to come up with some
turnkey solutions that protected all of us on this side of the fence.

Using Leslie's original idea would work fine, IMHO. You would not be
disabling their software, just your implementation of it. If they want
to extract the tarball from Miva and start over, they can.

A better idea (no module required) might also be to just keep the entire
site on your own domain until it's ready to go live ie: paid for.
Make it a part of your policies from the beginning so it never gets a
second glance. It's typical for web design and protects you and them.
You get paid, they don't get sued, everyone's happy. Also, take enough
up front to cover your asterisk - like Bruce said 50% is a good figure
if you've already produced a couple comps/prototype that they like.

It's part of the technical process, you don't need access to their
servers, etc. for their convenience you can keep the whole site on your
server until all things are approved and they are ready for release (of
                the check)!
