    sales tax by county?

Is there a tax module that can compute sales tax by county? I assume the
customer doesn't already have a table of all the Zip codes in the country,
so I guess some sort of on-line access would be required, perhaps to a USPS
database or some paid 3rd-party server ... any ideas? Thanks --

    Kent,

Checkout netblazon's module and see if that works
    http://jmhonline.net/miva-modules/zip+codes+by+county

what happens when zip codes cross county lines? ;)

      sales tax by county?

In NY, in a few places, they do. NY doesn't use counties or zip codes,
but instead tax locations. While the state says configuring by any other
means than tax location is illegal, the only way to truly do it is with
an addressing system, which is pricy. Most people either provide a list
of counties to their customers to select from, or use the zip code based
      module from NetBlazon.

I have used to have the counties dbf file on hand to give it out to
anyone on the list who requested it...
I could dig it up if you want it.

I believe the only one that works with Merchant is CertiTax. We have two
clients that use it have they have never complained to me about
it<G>...However, these are well heeled clients; CertiTax ain't cheap.

Andrew -- thanks for the offer. Of course, if the file is more than a few
months old, it's probably no longer completely accurate. Do you know where
the database came from, and how I could purchase it, subscribe, whatever,
in order to stay up to date?

Ah, yes... The counties tax rate is old so I guess it would be of little
              value. Sorry.

              You might try this:

              <A HREF ="http://www.tax.state.ny.us/pdf/publications/sales/pub718_1104.pdf">http://www.tax.state.ny.us/pdf/publications/sales/pub718_1104.pdf</A>

              And this

              <A HREF ="http://www.tax.state.ny.us/pdf/publications/sales/pub717_999.pdf">http://www.tax.state.ny.us/pdf/publications/sales/pub717_999.pdf</A>

A little work getting it into dbf and voila!

              Good luck!

                sales tax by county?

Sorry it's taken me this long to join the conversation; been on vacation.

We have a module that handles sales tax by zipcode, and this works in many
locations, such as Florida, Colorado, etc. Other locations, like California
or Ohio, do not have unique rates per zipcode. We once did a custom module
for a client in California, but it was yucky - customer had to choose their
county from a dropdown list on the OINF screen, which made it not much
better than Shopper Selected Sales Tax.

FWIW, we also sell databases of tax rates. The ones listed on our website
contain unique rates. When a zipcode has more than one tax rate, the
database uses the rate for the city that the USPS designates as the
"preferred city". We also have databases available for non-unique tax rates,
but there is currently no way to use these within Miva Merchant.

We're trying to determine ways to make a better sales tax module for clients
in places like CA, OH, etc. But we don't have anything on the near horizon,
yet. If you need something exact for these locations, then I believe that
Certitax is the only option. :(

                  sales tax by county?

Thanks to everybody who's contributed ideas.

In case my client is willing to go the expensive but reliable Certitax
option, is there a module available off the shelf that interfaces to
it? If not, has anyone done this as a custom job that they might like to
                  sell to another user?

                      sales tax by county?

It's actually packaged with Miva Merchant. I believe it requires some setup
on the server, including the Java VM. I don't know much about that, though,
so don't take my word for it.

There are probably other solutions similar to Certitax that don't yet have a
module to integrate Miva Merchant with their services. When I (and others)
said that Certitax was the only option, I meant that it was the only option
available without custom programming a module to interface with someone
                      else's system.
