    editing dbf files with Access

    I'm trying to edit my ordrchrg.dbf file using Microsoft Access. I'm
    able to link the file to access, but unable to edit it in any way. The
    file is not locked for read-only access. Does anyone have any thoughts?

            editing dbf files with Access



            You can't edit dbf files using MS Access, at least the 97 version. Maybe 2000 can but I doubt it. This will do it though:

            Download CDBF 1.01 with installer
            <A HREF ="http://www.whitetown.com/download.php3">http://www.whitetown.com/download.php3</A>

            Use 'Modify Structure' in the File menu.

              editing dbf files with Access



              You can with Access 2000. However, you need the latest Jet service
              pack to edit dbf's.

                editing dbf files with Access



                Actually you can with 97 provided you link not open. Its versions after 97
                and up to prior the latest XP version (which reinstates a dbaseIII
                connection driver). After 97, you have to obtain the Bourland Jet database
                drivers on your own and install them before you can link with Access.

                  AFAIK you can edit the *data* in the dbf file using Access but you can't modify the *structure* of the dbf which is what I thought Lisa was referring to...

                    editing dbf files with Access



                    I want to modify the data only, but I can't do it until I know what others
                    files it depends on.

                    My goals is to delete orders from my database, but not wipe the whole thing
                    clean. I want to modify ordrchrg.dbf, but I think there may be other files
                    that contain similar information.

                            editing dbf files with Access



                            Sorry, this is wrong.

                            Access 97 can LINK to and EDIT DBase format files.

                            Access 2000 (without the Jet 4.0 SP5 update) can LINK to, but
                            cannot EDIT DBase files.

                            If you have Access 2000 with the above behavior, get the
                            Jet 4.0 Service Pack 5 update.

                            To whomever was wondering what Jet is, Jet is the native database
                            engine in Access 95/97 and 2000. (I think Access 2002 might use
                            a different engine.)

                              This is true, Access will not let you modify the STRUCTURE of a linked file,
                              whether it is DBase, native Access, Paradox, etc.
