OT: how best to create html newsletters?

    Hi Tom,

Give Scot's Mailing List a shot. You can download a copy and play around
    with it from:

    <A HREF ="http://www.scotsscripts.com/scripts/scotmail2.zip">http://www.scotsscripts.com/scripts/scotmail2.zip</A>

This is full featured except that you can not send out the newsletters
    until you purchase a license.

If you decide to get a license, do it from my site as the price is
somewhere around $40 less than the MivaCentral price.

    Regards,

    Scot

    customizing search box

look carefully at the source on the search screen
you probably need a hidden form field like name=screen value=SRCH
Your form isn't telling Merchant where to go

If ALL the links are like this /page/IP/PROD/HCR004 it's okay? But if
there are links that are not they need to be standardized? I have a client
that asked to use static "doorway" pages - what about those?

If you're going to use a challenge/response spam blocker, at least use one
that can apply rules to allow list mail through without having to require
every single member of the list to respond. Choice mail

Miva can't stop them, as they are sent direct to you after the message
is recieved from the list. That said, it would be great if they'd add
    something to the footer...

Please do NOT use SpamArrest (or other similar services) on the

Please do NOT set vacation/away autoresponders on the address you use
    for the lists.

I'm sure everyone here received (non-spam) html newsletters and at least
a few of you create them as well. What do you use? I've looked at using
Outlook (w/MS Word as the editor) or using Incredimail or similar for
creating newsletters to send to subscribers, but they don't seem well
    suited for the task.

Also, how do you send them? I know many hosts have no-mass-email
policies, as does my ISP. Gotta be an "official" way to do it.

    Thanks,
    Tom

I found a couple of options that offer combined benefits of listserv and
online discussion forums. Has anyone here used either? Anyone else think
something like this would be a good thing for this Miva group?

I'm not a big fan of listserv and would really prefer the option of a
regular discussion forum (not the same as the current online listserv
archive). These 2 options seem to provide the best of both worlds, so might
be popular with many Miva users.

    1) phpBB Mail2Forum (M2F).
Add-on to phpBB forum that combines the functionality of a listserv mailing
    list and a forum.

A couple of sites using it:

    2) EchoForum.
Links posts from multiple forums, rss feeds, listservs into a single
interface. Works with a variety of forum and listserv software.

If you go into the module, (System Extension Configuration > CBS Search
Friendly Links), you'll see where you can select which type of link style
    you want it to create.

I think in an earlier post you said you had it set to Short Link. You can
change it here to Directory Style.

    Good luck!

    Hey Bruce,

While we're on the subject of your dynamic attribute module, I have a usage
question for you. I understand that selecting an attribute can change the
product image, but what happens if you have multiple attributes? Does one
control the image or can certain combinations be set as the trigger? My
attributes are mainly additions or subtractions from a kit. How can I show
the effect of each? This is why I've previously asked about embedding a
link within a attribute prompt. However, I'd rather keep the users within
the current product and simply show them a picture of what they are getting
    for their extra few bucks.

    Thanks!

Yikes! Almost 35K in JS code to do that...hmmm, don't think I wanna go
there....though image swapping with Dynamic Attributes produces a similar
effect, the blending effect would require a complete rewrite...cool as it
is, its also pretty bandwidth intensive when all you want to do is show the
    different options.

Thanks so much Jason. Now, bear with me... I am still recovering from
my missing 'add to basket' buttons...

So, what you are saying is if I enter in my robots.txt file:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /miva/

This will disallow all robots from spidering my dynamic links BUT any
SFL directory style link the robot encounters during the indexing
    process will be followed.

So, the robot cannot read the .htaccess rewrite and realize those pages
are really residing in the /miva/ directory?

I really, really want to attend! I just cannot believe that I can fly
to NY from Phoenix for less than $300 but a hop to Dallas is $400+.

    OT: Google link?

    Hi Julie:

Thanks. Sounds like they simply added "redirect permanent" lines to your
.htaccess file. I'll hit the Google website which explains this I believe,
but if anyone can confirm that, I'd appreciate it.

    Thank you

    Hi Dave,

No, no content at all at the domain I had pointing via nameservers.
What happened is, I own www. ultimatenourishment .com (I am breaking up
the url as I do not want spidering of my 301 domain since these archives
do get spidered) and had used my host's nameservers to point people who
may have typed this domain into their browser to resolve to the domain
with all my content which is www.ultimate-weight-products.com This
worked great as far as bringing people who typed my business' name in
the url field. However, Google picked up the www. ultimatenourishment
.com link as people would use this url in forums, etc. Anyway, Google
saw the same content on www. ultimatenourishment .com as on
www.ultimate-weight-products.com, plus since all my links on
www.ultimate-weight-products.com are relative, when one would arrive at
my site via the www. ultimatenourishment .com, the www.
ultimatenourishment .com would still resolve with the
ultimatenourishment in it.... ie: www. ultimatenourishment
.com/page/UN/CTGY/strainer. LOL, does this make sense so far?

When I noticed my site literally disappeared from the face of Google, I
researched, and found that the only acceptable redirect method as far as
Google's Terms Of Use is a 301 (permanent) redirect. And that anecdotal
information suggested that sites were getting penalized and even banned
for using any other redirect method.

So, my ever so amazing host (dotCOM designers) figured out a way to give
a 301 header on any url containing www. ultimatenourishment .com to
www.ultimate-weight-products.com Meaning if there is a url out there
like www. ultimatenourishment .com /page/UN/CTGY/strainer and someone
clicks on it (or Google's spider follows it), it will give a 301 and
    take the visitor to http://www.ultimate-weight-products..../CTGY/strainer

I am unsure exactly how the 301 is written to achieve this, but I am
sure David (your host) knows as well.

    I hope this helps.

    Julie

I've completely lost you. Oh well- thanks for trying. I don't want to take
more of your time. Maybe another user can explain in language simple enough
    for my brain : (

You need to read the documentation. It does what you tell it to do.

No. Just block /Merchant2/ as instructed in previous emails about
    robots.txt

Can't answer your other questions, but this one seemed fairly easy.

Because Merchant doesn't (and probably shouldn't) assume that you have
Apache/mod_rewrite installed, and that you have an appropriate
    .htaccess file.

ps: it's not a ridiculous question, and you get bonus points for
    spelling ridiculous correctly :)
