We are the hosting company, and we've been running Miva stores on
Windows based servers without any problems for over 3 years now. We
have not upgraded our version of Miva or Empressa because the costs are
exorbitant (as are the support offerings - which used to be free to
licensed owners prior to the compiled versions having been introduced).
Needless to say, we have since found better, more cost effective
e-commerce solutions, and will no longer be purchasing any new Miva
licenses. We do have a responsibility to cater to our existing Miva
users, however, .. which is why I've posted my inquiry to the list.

We are using shared SSL because the control panel software we have
carefully selected and invested thousands of dollars in does not allow
for it. We are not nearly as upset about this as you seem to be, ..
though we appreciate your concern :) Having gotten all that out of the
way, .. do you have any technical advice to offer? Or were you simply
trying to pitch me on switching to your Miva hosting services?

      Yvan,
As a successful online store owner, and having gone through many stores
both as a developer for others and for my own, I will never ever use a
      shared SSL ever.
Period. NEVER. Online customers are smart and becoming more educated
everyday. They expect to see no change in url and expect to see secure
      checkout.
I can tell you with 100% assurity. Stores who use shared SSL certs will
never make as much as if they had their own certs.
I will bet odds in Las Vegas on that. It's just a fact.
If you are telling your customers that it makes no differnce. You are
doing them a huge disservice. And also hampering their ability to grow
their stores and sites as well as they could.
Please tell me your hosting domain so that I am sure not to go there.

      Kelly

        Re: *** OFFLIST REPLY *** RE: Server 2003 / Miva v3.02 / Shared SSL

        Yvan,

I find it interesting that a knowledgable, established and well-respected host
has pointed out several legitimate concerns over your hosting situation
(whether you are self-hosted or not). Rather than gracefully accept the
assistance, you proceed to do the following:

        1) Reply to an offlist message and send it to the list
        2) Ignore the advice given; rather, you go on to point out why the advice is
        wrong or unusable
        3) Accuse the author of the message of merely "trying to pitch [you] on
switching to [their] Miva hosting service".

It's really no wonder that you've received such a poor response to your query.
If you already know how to fix the problem, why did you even both to post the
question? I'm not sure I understand why anyone would volunteer to help after
watching someone else get shot down in their attempt.

As for accusing the author of trying to pitch his services... isn't that what
hosts are supposed to do? Is the author's role in life simply to respond to as
many messages as possible without any type of compensation, indirect as it may
be? Miva does not pay anyone on this list to help others. If you prefer not to
be "pitched" on the software and services that many on this list offer, I
suggest buying a service contract for Miva Technical Support. After all, they
wrote it, so they should be able to answer your questions.

        Color me puzzled,
        Tom
