For those of you who spend too many hours in front of a monitor what do
you do about eye strain and glare? I have a (anti)glare screen, have
eliminated florescent lights and try to block any sunlight over my
shoulder. I'm in the process of trying to rule out the source of my
perpetual headache (since October). The doctor is 95% sure it's a migraine
gone mad. I'm scheduled for an MRI today and had my eyes examined
yesterday. Most interesting - the eye that is hurting me (right) also
needs to have the vision corrected. The left is fine and needs no
correction. Which makes me wonder - are the headaches being caused by the
bad vision in the one eye or are the headaches causing the bad vision in
that eye. I assuming my best bet is to get glasses but I also seem to be
very sunlight sensitive. I was wondering how well something like a
Sunsensors/Transitions type lens would work with computer monitors? Anyone
    have any suggestions?

    Thanks so much!

I have one at home - doubt the day job would buy one. But if the doctor
      recommends it ;)

Ergonomics in the office is a touchy subject - a company better not deny an
employee what that employee needs to remain healthy. Law suit central, is
what it is. If your doctor says the migraines even MAY be because of your
monitor, your company (unless they're stupid like so many are) will buy you
whatever monitor you need. If you get an LCD, get one with a high refresh
rate and high aspect ratio - in other words, get the best. A crappy LCD can
        be worse than a CRT.

Another thing I learned after having ongoing eye strain is the problem
usually is that you're looking at something the eye has to focus on
intensely - like looking at a mirror that is reflecting a mountain - does
the eye focus short-distance on the mirror, or long distance on the
mountain? Monitors are similarly confusing to the eye - they are up close,
        yet they often have depth.

So, place some items beyond your monitor - at as great a distance as your
office allows - and very very often - like once a minute - turn your head,
focus on it, allow your eyes to adjust, then go back to the monitor. This
little exercise helps the muscles in your eyes relax, sort of like flexing a
leg muscle that is cramping up from being under strain too long.

I moved my office to my sun room for this reason - I can look out at my bird
feeders (and birds), at the trees, at the chipmunks. My eyes have never felt
        better.

The LCD will help, but the eyestrain will persist if you have a vision correction
deficiency. Whether or not that would cause a migraine, I'm not to sure, but then, most
Dr. misdiagnose a lot of "frequent" head pain as migraines. Go to a REALY good
optometrist, get a pair of glasses just for computer use. If your headaches persist, see a
          headache specialist.

            Hi Leslie,
What is the monitor Refresh Frequency rate? If it's below 70 Hz, it makes
people dizzy or headache. On newer ones, it can be set at 85 Hz or so. I
would also check and reduce the brightness level & contrast rate to a
minimum. If you can trade for a Sony Trinitron tube type, the glare is
softer on your eyes. For reducing of neck strain, make sure the
eye-to-monitor level is comfort. I prefer the monitor is sit a little bit
below my eye level (so I look down instead of look up to the monitor). Once
for a while, close the eyes and image the screen for a moment, I found it
helps me to relieve some of tiredness/glareness. But total good postures is
a must for working long hours at the monitor every day. Of course you have
to get the correct glasses first.
            Hope it helps,
            Mario

Ah yes, good old anti-seizure medication. Did your doctor give you any
advice on what may be *causing* the headaches rather than giving you drugs
                  to treat them?

Oh great - now I'm gonna get fleas and need rabies shots too? Yes, Topamax
is an anti-seizure drug that have been approved for the treatment of
Migraines. It had better work at $150 a month.

LOL, I know of a discount canine pharmacy that you may be able to get it
                      less expensive :-D

Not enough sleep (she really fussed at me about that one), too many hours
in front of a monitor, not taking any time off. We discussed foods and
drink - pointed out things I've already given up because of known
triggers. My main trigger at the moment is bright sunlight - glare.
Although a popcicle's ice cream headache trigger the one on Monday. The
"problem" that finally sent me to the doctor (I've had migraines all my
life) has been the ear & eye pain with facial numbness. So yes, we talked
for 45 minutes before she wrote the prescription and then called me the
next morning with a location for my MRI.

OT: Eye strain, headaches, glare & glasses

By the way, having been a VP at a health products company that had products
for humans and animals, the FDA better controls what is available for
animals than for humans. We found much stronger restrictions and
requirements for animal products than human products. So, the canine drugs
are probably higher quality than the human ones...

LCD's are great but if you do a lot of image editing, CRT's still seem to be
a better choice for color accuracy. I bought a used 21 inch Flat tube
Trinitron for like $230 shipped and my eyes feel better. The key for me has
                            been a high refresh rate of 120Hz at 1280x1024. I tried 1600x1200 at 100Hz
but my hurt my eyes, so I bumped down. Most people seem to not notice
anything about 100Hz, but I did.

Someone else recommended looking at something in the office far away. That
is one of the best things you can do. Basically when you look at your
monitor, you are focusing your eyes on one spot (distance) for an extended
time. It is like writing with a pen, after a while you hand gets tired and
you loosen your grip on the pen. Well your eyes get tired in the same way
and you have to let them relax bye looking away. Your eyes are run my
muscles, and they need to be relaxed too.

My father has bad vision from diabetes, but it started to go long before
that because he was a printer that would clean proofs at the same distance
for hours at a time. So this type of issue isn't just for us who are chained
to out computers for 12 hours a day.
