Changing web hosts - how to transfer miva store data

    --0-372818565-1096579103=:77338
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I have 4 Miva stores that I have to transfer to another web host. I can't find any way to backup and import the existing store content. In a test on the new server, flat file import didn't seem to preserve the categories. The product attributes, which are extensive on 3 or the stores, are lost. There's no obvious way to import the orders and customers.

Unless I'm missing something, changing web hosts means a near total rebuild of the store and only one of my 4 customers is willing to do that. The others want a different ecommerce solution that is more portable if that's the case.

Anybody have any suggestions or can identify anything I'm missing?

Any good host will move the store for you as-is to=20
keep you from losing any data. If they don't offer
that service, they are not a good choice for
Miva Merchant hosting. :-) That's my opinion of
    course...

I agree. If you're on your own in moving, then the host you're moving to is
going to be a problem. Several hosts on this list will move you at no charge
in a way that keeps down time, and your effort, to almost nill, such as
Hostasaurus... So before you go through all the effort, it might be worth
the investigation time in finding the right host to move TO.

          Hi MB:

No, the exporting won't get most of the store
details. Just move the entire database directory,
and the script directory (where the .mvc files are)
to the new host. You will probably need to update
some licenses and change some of the server URLs
if you don't own your Merchant license. If you're
not sure what to change them to (if anything), check
with your new host to make sure you get them right.
By moving all the database files, you can move the
stores between servers as-is without losing any
          data/settings.

For clarification, you mean FTP those files, right? Since MB was talking
exporting and importing, I figure it might be worth mentioning.

Details, details :-) Yes, FTP or a similar method
              of file transfer is needed.

                Hi MB,

Any decent host (and most are well represented on this list), will transfery
our existing store "as is" with all your settings, products, customer
database, and everything else you currently have. If your new host doesn't
offer this kind of service - look for a different host. A good host should
provide this service to you for several reasons: a) to make sure everything
gets transferred properly and you do not lose anything in the process, and
                b) the new host needs to change your Merchant license key anyway - unless
you own your license outright and are not just leasing one from your current
                host.

Moving Miva Merchant stores is very straightforward and not a hugely
difficult process. The difference is in the pudding, as they say, though.
Some hosts will put your domain name (and your store, email, etc) in a limbo
while the DNS changes replicate. Others will make sure you have zero
downtime and do not have to check two stores for 2-3 days to make sure you
get all your orders, emails, etc. The more transparrent we can make it for
you, the better the end result.

Hope this helps, but if you have any questions - my number is in the
                signature.

                Cheers!
