MM5 and downloadable products

I've been reading the PDF of the new Miva book by Pamela, and I just read
the mail newsletter from Miva about the recent conference. In the book there
is mention, in an early chapter, of an ability to "sell products customers
will download (incurring no shipping charges)" (Page 29). I have not found
any further reference to this in the book, but I'm very interested in
knowing how it can be done, as we have several e-books we want to sell.

However, in the Miva newsletter, in listing the new features of the
as-yet-unreleased MM5, it says, on such new feature will be "Electronic
Content Distribution - allowing merchants to offer downloadable products".

So, is it possible NOW to offer downloadable products? And if so, what is
new in MM5 in this regard? Anyone know?

Hi Allen, you can do it now via the Viking Coders
Soft Goods module or the Truxoft MmPass module.
Both can be found at http://www.mivacentral.com/=20

MM5 will supposedly have this feature built in
direct from Miva so an add-on will not be needed.

Hi Allen,

It is available now. See
http://jmhonline.net/modules/Downloa...Access_Modules

MM5 will indeed have this feature out of the box but probably won't have all
the features of the current modules that do it. You could wait to see if it
will do everything you need, but you may not be ready to upgrade to mm5 for
almost a year regardless of when it actually comes out.

Yes, in much the same way that an affiliate or PayPal add-on module is not
needed now.

Sorry, just couldn't resist the temptation on that one.

Thanks. The statement in the book misled me to think that this could be
accomplished somehow in standard Miva, as it exists, but from the responses
it appears that an add-on module is necessary, and a fairly expensive one at
that.

I'll be finishing my reading of the book later this week, I hope. If I find
any more there I'll let this list know.

Pamela, are you reading this? If so, what did you have in mind when you
wrote that statement about downloads?

Since my store is on a web hosting company, pair.com, I'm dependent on them
to update to v5, so it can't really be predicted; since the new version is
supposedly scheduled for the end of this year, I definitely do not want to
wait for pair.com to update. Either I find a way to do it in standard Miva,
or we'll have to buy a module. (I should add that we are already selling our
e-books on another, non-Miva, site (which we want to integrate with our
Miva-based store), with software custom-written for us by a gifted young
programmer who also happens to be my step-daughter. Unfortunately, she is
thoroughly engaged now in her PhD program and no longer available to work at
slave wages!)

Dan,

Actually from what the Burchmeister said, it sounds like it is going to be
better than the average built-in feature previously. It is going to have
immediately download with expiration by date, number of downloads, or both.
Probably will be similar to modstop's url secure

MM5 and downloadable products

Well, I don't sell downloadable products so it really doesn't matter to me
but, for the sake of others, I hope you're right. I just tend to take
everything Miva says about a new feature with a grain of salt. Besides, all
the reports from the conference seem to indicate that Miva was pretty vague
on the version 5 details at least from an end-user's standpoint so it seems
like a lot of things have yet to be made clear.

If Miva ever starts taking their new focus on the Merchant "community"
seriously and decides to play an active role on this list by engaging in
discussions then I'll feel a little more comfortable with taking their
announcements at face value. Until then though, I'm staying in "wait and
see" mode.

Dan,

Actually from what the Burchmeister said, it sounds like it is going to be
better than the average built-in feature previously. It is going to have
immediately download with expiration by date, number of downloads, or both.
Probably will be similar to modstop's url secure

How To Ship?
You need to decide how you will be shipping orders. You may decide to ship
UPS, USPS, FEDEX, Airborne, or other ways. You may also sell products
customers will download (incurring no shipping charges). Finding out up
front the most effective shipping methods for you will not only make the
configuration process easier, but will give you the ability to charge
accurate and competitive shipping costs.
