transferring a domain

I need to transfer a domain and it's the first time I've had to. I went
to Network Solutions to try this, and there was message saying it could
be 3-6 weeks, or I could pay $199 to expedite. The WHP advertises 5-7
days for the change.

I guess I'm confused on what to expect. I may be making it more
complicated than it really is, but What should I expect? What is the
best way to transfer the domain -- Network Solutions or thru the WHP.

TIA

Go through the hosting company - they can handle the domain transfer for
you - usually takes 3-5 days.

Scott,

Where does it say it takes 3 to 6 weeks and that you can pay
$199 to expedite?

It normally only takes 1 or 2 days to transfer a domain (and then
another day for the new DNS addresses to propagate).

What slows the process down is if you've changed E-Mail addresses
since you registered because they send the form to the address that
is in the WhoIs database. In this case, you get into Faxing the form
on your letterhead and that can take about a week.

Personally, I wouldn't let the Hosting Provider do anything. They put
themselves in as the Technical Contact and when you transfer your
domain, they can make your life miserable by NAK'ing the request
to transfer (for instance, if you are not paid up, they can (and will)
tell the Internic not to transfer your domain).

Basically, all you need are your new DNS Host names and IP
addresses and you can do the transfer yourself.

I read this late last night somewhere on the "make changes" page, I think
when I was select the forms to use. Did I read it wrong?

Scott,

Found it!

That is a Legal Name change.

This is used if you want to change the Registrant info.

I had to do that once and had to use a Notary. It took somewhere
around 3 weeks. This is yet another reason not to let your
future Hosting Provider do the domain registration for you. In my
case they used the wrong Company name and in order to change
it I had to do the Notary Public crapola that the Internic puts you
through.

If you are simply switching Hosts, then you need the
Domain Name Registration Agreement Form (DNRA).

Goto http://www.networksolutions.com/makechanges/

Type in your Domain Name.

On the next screen, click the "Beginner" graphic.

On the next screen, select "Switch ISP's" from the drop down list.

You will fill out an on-line form and they will E-mail it to you where
you then simply reply to the message they send.

Note that they send the Form to the E-Mail address on record. If
you've changed your E-Mail address then you have to do the FAX
method of changing your info.

Make sure you fill out all of the on-line info correctly and then
when you receive the E-Mail (within minutes), all you have to do is
reply to it. They will then do the transfer within 1 to 3 days (normally
less than a day) and your site should be available at your new Host
within a day or two after they do the transfer.

Kenny is right about timeframes, except that in some areas of the world it
can take a week to update servers with DNS changes. As far a letting the
ISP/IHP do the move I have not personally had a problem with that. After
the move, because you own the domain, you can go to the InterNIC site that
did the move and change the technical contact yourself. I do this with each
move. -- works for me.
