    Miva VM reliability on IIS

A while back we were discussing the reliability of MVM on IIS. Anyone have
some experience with IIS 6 and MVM? I've been running some smaller sites
without a problem, but I'm wondering how IIS would handle a large site.

I was running a high-traffic application on IIS 5 in the MVM 4.x early days
and we had to restart IIS every couple days. I wonder if anything has
    changed. ?

Also does anyone know if MVM 5 changed performance/reliability of the VM?

    TIA.

Maybe I should rephrase my question to cover a broader spectrum ... anyone
run into Miva VM stability trouble on Linux?

      Miva VM reliability on IIS

      Hi,

I run a few websites on IIS and some high traffic on Linux. I have the
latest VM and I didn't had any server problems at all. The Linux server is a
3.0 GHz Pentium Processor (800MHz FSB) with 1 GB DDR PC2700 RAM ECC and the
Win is 2.6 GHz Celeron Processor (400MHz FSB) with 512 MB DDR PC2700 RAM
ECC. The OS is 2000 Advanced Server.
I also run all my back-up clients websites on my intranet server (2000
Advanced server too) with IIS... and a poor 2Ghz AMD processor + 250 RAM :)
What can I say.. all works fine .. no problem at all. I never had to reboot
the server. I run only "home made" mivascript applications .. and I can only
say that they are more resources consumers than the Merchant.
Beside the server configuration one important thing that matter for me is
the Miva Scripting. You can have the best server in the world, but if you
run dumb scripts on it, you will certainly have problems. So for my side I
never had problems with the Virtual Machine..

      Best regards,
      Claudiu Bischoff

Thanks Claudiu, glad to hear you've had positive experiences with the =
        VM.
Looks like you're running some decent hardware there too ;-)

I guess there's only one way to find out how reliable it is for our
situation -- I'll have to bang it up and see what happens.

The frequent crashing we were dealing with may have had to do with the =
        fact
that we were using SQL with Miva -- or that we were doing a lot of =
        MvCALL.
        Don't know.

Oh.. I forgot to tell you that I had problems with SQL ... a while ago and I
had to work with native dbf ( with a solid dbf management we can have lot of
data without any problems.. the only problem is the space after that).
Didn't tested with the new miva-sql (waiting for the compiler)... but I'll
keep you informed when I'll do it :)

          Best regards

I know its a small distinction to some, but Empresa was never released for
IIS 6 -- only for IIS 5 under NT/W2K. There are instructions for its
install under W3K, but no formal statement of support for that
platform. Nor was one ever predicted/intended when we last chased the matter.

We have had many more issues regarding the stability of MySQL under W2K
that Empresa. The idea of combining the two on one stable server can prove
a somewhat frightful experience. And the cost and hardware resources
required under Win for that combo are silly-level compared to Linux. Once
you include the OS and basic supporting apps, you are talking about close
to a $3k-$4k software difference between the two platforms. Running MM
under Win has always been one of the most expensive ways to run Merchant -
            and now its even worse.

To quote our President's daddy: "Just not going to do it. Not prudent at
            this juncture."

While internal corporate users might be able to justify a $3k software
investment on a $3k hardware platform, most hosting companies will skip
that $6,000 Win solution and smile large at a $1,000 all-inclusive Linux
            solution.

In our experience the stability issues of MM under Win have always revolved
around add-on modules -- not with the core systems. We have had
"professional" module developers react to serious Win-based module issues
            with a simple "So what?".

            Just an opinion...
