Thanks for your response. No shopping cart, just a single item purchase
using a simple HTML form post to PayPal. That part I have working.
The code I am having difficulties with is the real-time purchase
confirmation (IPN - instant payment notification). This is a form post
back to my page from PayPal that occurs after the transaction is
processed. Based on the transaction results (completed, pending,
failed, canceled) posted to my page I either update my database and ship
the item, or ignore the non-completed transaction. I cannot determine
what information PayPal is sending me via the form post. A better
description of IPN is located here
If you click on code samples there is exactly what I need except coded
in ASP, cold fusion, jsp, perl, and php. No miva script flavor
available. That is what I'm looking for if possible.

You need to build a database with the applicable variables that the IPN
sends. Then have a mivascript that is run by the IPN (fill in the
preference url at paypal.com with the mv script url). The IPN guide
tells you exactly what variables are being passed. You store those
variables in your database. This is done routinely using the paypal
module and miva merchant.
