    [OT] Mac conversion

Sorry for the off-topic, but I did not find anything on the Web and because
I know there are people on this list using Mac, I hope somebody could help
    me. Please reply off-list.

I have a customer who sends me files made on a Mac made with Quark Xpress.
Unfortunately he is unable to save them in any other format, telling that
there is no such possibility in Quark. I managed to convert the Mac
formatted Zip to PC-readable, but did not find any tool to convert the data
in any readable format (e.g. EPS, PDF, TIFF, JPG, PNG or something similar).
Also JPEG files from Mac people come in four color-separated files. When
looking into the Quark files, I see 'MMXPR3', so I suppose he uses version
    3.

Is there any way to convert the files?

Thanks in advance and sorry again for the off-topic,
    Ivo

No, not without opening them in Quark for Windows, which triggers an automatic conversion. The same operates in reverse for Win->Mac conversion.

FWIW, I have used Quark cross-platform for about 10 years now. Deal with it on a daily basis.

Second issue is also that Quark will give unpredictable results when processing Mac-format image files under the Win version (and visa versa). When working with TIF or EPS images, they usually need to be converted individually. We open them in Photoshop and do a "save as..." to convert the file format. This is particularly true with Mac/Win format EPS files, as the preview image (file header) can really mess things up at output time (if sending to an imagesetter) if saved in a competing format. But things have improved greatly in this regard over the last few years, so its really more imagesetter dependent now than it used to be.

    Such is life with Quark.

If you have Adobe PageMaker 6.5 there is a converter your client can install and run to convert the files for you. Please note that I have never done this, just looked it up for you...

Your client should be able to save individual pages directly out of Quark as
pdf documents. I've had some success with this but have not found the 100%
        foolproof solution, yet.

Your sender can also try a conversion through a program like "MacLink
Plus". I also use a mac.

sorry, but in the case of Quark or image files, MacLink would have no effect at all.
