Split payment capabilities

One of my clients is interested in using the split-payment feature for a custom project. We have a couple of questions about what this can do.

1. Can it be used to pay for one order with two credit cards? Or is it only for combining a Customer Credit with another payment method?

2. Can it be used to put more than two payment methods on a single order?

I understand that we may need custom payment modules to take advantage of these features. We want to know what's possible, not just what's available with off-the-shelf payment modules.

All the functions are documented and customercredit is in the LSK and in theory we believe it can do what you want to do.

However we don’'t consider our split payment API mature enough for us to support you trying to do anything beyond what’s stock in the software.

I guess I'm a little surprised that you haven't tried splitting an order across two credit cards. Nowadays, so many people have those $50 or $100 gift cards that they receive on a holiday, or as a bonus when making some larger purchase. They buy something that uses $43 of the $50, and then they have no easy way to get to that last $7. An on-line store that accepts two cards for one order will solve that problem.

Seems like this would be a popular feature. Has anyone tried it?

I can tell you we built it with that in mind, which is why we believe it'll work (and that's how our gift certificate (customer credit) system fundamentally works). However we have not internally done a two separate card test.
