Just thought I would post this for anyone else who might search. The Suivant Ready Theme displays the number of products in the basket dynamically in the Global Header using javascript, which is nice because adding products to the cart does not cause the page to refresh and so would not update the number of products in the Global Header until you visit another page.
The javascript is already there to do the same with the basket amount, you can add a span with the ID of "js-mini-basket-subtotal" and put the item: &mvt:global_minibasket:formatted_total; in the span like this:
and you will get the basket subtotal automatically updated.
