can I edit a framework before installing it?

I read in these forums that frameworks are tarballs.
So can i untar it locally, edit the files, retarr and then use it normally?
Is there anything I need to do?

Basically I am cloning an older store into a new store on a new domain.
I am not wanting several of the modules from the old store. But I found that
if I do not have all the modules refrenced in the framework, pre-installed on the new store first, I can not import the framework.

I don't want to remove the modules from the old store before I create it's framework.
So what do I do? I thought maybe there is a way to strip out the tags in the templates inside the framework?

Never delt with the tarball...but we often, ok, we always start sites by importing our own page templates. Just export them from the old site (and edit them with a text editor if necessary), then import.

Okay, so instead of the quick and easy Framework that has it's quirks of referencing a stray module here and there, it's better to do a page by page import? But before importing you have to go through and glean out the unwanted tokens?

One more question - what happens if I import a page template that has a token that I may have missed?

On a side note, it would be nice if when importing a framework it would list ALL of the missing modules instead of this find them one by one nonsense.

#1 When you go to update that template it will complain...until then...nothing happens
