MIVA Merchant v5 integration into Plesk control panels

It's a good day in the Plesk world today... (well, actually, yesterday was the launch). SWsoft, the makers of Plesk, announced integration of their popular control panel with MIVA Merchant v5. Plesk v8.1.1 now has built in support for MIVA VM v5.x and MIVA Merchant v5, out of the box - joining the ranks of other control panels that provide similar level of integration (like Ensim, as an example).

I wonder if they are going to blow up when Empresa is upgrade, just like the others do :)

      Vic,

I'm afraid you may not know enough about Ensim or Plesk to speak with that level of authority... Neither Ensim nor Plesk "blows up" when you upgrade Empresa. We've been using both control panels for several years, and Ensim had support for Empresa v4.x and v5.x for a long long time and we've not once had a problem doing upgrades - whether manual or by changing the skeleton files that get rolled out to brand new sites. Similarly, we've been beta testing Plesk/MIVA integration for couple months now on both Plesk and Virtuozzo servers and have not run into any problems.

Do you have any first-hand experience with this and can demonstrate an actual problem?

Get off your soap box Remik.

I'm not speaking from authority...just from the hundreds of posts over the years about the problems experienced by others.

Do a simple search of the old mail list and this forum and see for yourself.

I'm afraid the "soapbox" is entirely yours. The "hundreds of posts" you speak of have nothing to do with blowing things up - they were questions like "how do I set up Empresa on <control panel name here>". The few I recall that had issues were simply not familiar with installing anything on Linux or didn't know the proper server paths to reference in miva(vm).conf files - I'd call that rookie sysadmin mistakes or lack of knowledge, not problems with any specific control panels. Those work very well out of the box or with properly applied VM upgrades, no black magic there.

Again, if you have a specific example of "blowing things up", please forward them to us, to SWsoft or to Ensim - that's a lot more productive if you want a resolution than posting unsubstantiated claims in online forums not monitored by either of these companies.

Will this open the way to including MIVA Express as part of a hosting package outside of the MIVA Corp's offering?

No - this only integrates MIVA Virtual Machine (currently v5.06) into Plesk, so that you can install MIVA Merchant or MIVA Fast Track on a per-domain basis. MIVA Express is still only a MIVA-hosted solution, not something web hosts can offer on their own servers.

                Hi Remik,

For the fun of it, I yesterday updated Plesk to 8.1 and installed Empresa via the control panel on three domains. It worked like a charm, absolutely flawlessly. Obviously, manual configurations/fine-tuning will still have to be handled in such horribly, horribly clumsy way as before, as Plesk doesn't allow to edit the Empresa settings directly from the panel. But still, it is far easier and faster than before, and that alone is a big plus.

                  Hey Markus,

Cool - that's good to hear! We have over 300 servers with Plesk 8.1.1 already (working on upgrading the rest from 8.1.0) and have not seen any problems, either. The one central installation is not exactly what we were pushing for during beta testing with SWsoft, but... that was a decision that MIVA had greater influence over. The good news is that it works well, and you can always customize everything your way if you have to - including individual VM installations at the domain level - so overall it's a nice, quick and easy, yet flexible solution. "Good enough" for most people, yet tweakable for those of us that like to squeeze every last bit of performance or implement additional options for very specific needs.

                    Remik,

So does this mean I only have to put in tickets for additional license keys, but not to have you install Empresa for new sites?

That is correct - though as you probably know, the defaults in Empresa may not be the most optimal as they are very, very generic. Since we pride ourselves in optimizing all our servers for best MIVA performance - including dedicated server clients' servers - simply let us know which domain you are installing MIVA Merchant on and we'll apply our tweaks. Every little bit helps and the few minutes we'll have to spend on any new sites you create is not a big deal - our support staff will be happy to make these changes for you.
