copy products in order to duplicate them for similar items

I talked to miva support today about it and they suggested that I post it on the forum. This has been posted in the long long original dream features thread, before dream features became it's own forum. I remember somewhere in the forums that it was 'slated for a future release'. Well, in order to make it pop up on everyone's horizon. I"m posting it as it's own thread here in the dream features forum.

Many of us want the ability to COPY a product, all it's settings, all it's images, all it's everything. Many of us have very similar items that we just need to change a few fields for and having to reenter all the same data 10 times or more in a row is really really frustrating and boring.

I envision an additional button on the bottom of a product screen that says copy. I think it would be best located in the center bottom, away from the delete button (thank you for moving that!), but not right next to the update button either. There is room for it centered down there.

It would simply copy the entire product and all it's associated settings, custom fields, etc. almost everything except active/inactive.
It would be set to inactive, so it won't show in the store until we want to turn it on.

    for naming...
The copy process could do one of two things.
    1. would append -copy to the product code, so we can find it easily and then we can edit it.
    OR
    2. the copy would require us to insert a new product code at the time of copying.(that way we wouldn't have a conflict if we wanted to copy an item multiple times before we edited the copies.
Now that would be very very nice!

I hope we get a ton of comments on this thread so Miva knows how bad we want it.

This comes up a lot but it's an issue at the API level. We've started down this path before (and will someday figure it out) but assuming you hit COPY, what exactly will it copy? It doesn't know anything about the info from third party mods for example and all of our internal mods would need some sort of Copy function added to the API and then updated.
    Thanks,

I would have it copy all the miva data regarding that product, the product description, images, imagemachine images/types, custom product fields. all teh per product settings for miva built in shipping modules, etc.

Just have it copy as much as it can that miva is responsible for becuase it's provided with the default store sans third party modules. That would go a long way towards helping reduce the amount of manual duplicate work for entering products.

Probably a few logical things would have to be set to 0 like the number sold. I dont' remember if that is a cumulative field in miva or not.

That doesn't work on the product admin screen. It requires access to the store utilities in the admin.
For many website owners that might work.
But for ones who have many people accessing the store admin and who use the access control. It's really not a viable option.

For my situation, we have two employees who are allowed to have customer and order access.
Other employees maintain product data, enter new products and that kind of thing. They have no need in their day to day job to access any customer information, nor should they.

To use that module, one must have access to the utilties admin.
BUT utilities contains.. well modules that can access customer data like toolkit.

Miva doesn't have hooks in the admin screens for third parties to insert or add code like a "copy" button.
So Miva needs to do this as a part of the product administration functions.

I know you're looking for an Admin solution, but StoreMan has done this for more than a decade...

A quick FYI, because this is announced elsewhere, there is an update to Product Copy. One feature enhancement included is a Product Copy Tab when you are editing a product.

I think that it can be safely from duplicate copy or document when we use any admin to maintain data.
