Allow Masters to be Updated with Attribute Pricing if the Master has Variants

We have a situation and think other merchants do too, where allowing Attributes with pricing to update a Master, if the Master has Variants.

    Example:

We have lights that come in different models (battery powered, plug-in, etc.) but we add certifications to them. We do not need to create individual part numbers for each light type with an associated certifications as the certifications do not change the part number, it is only an add-on feature to the product.

Currently we have to create a part number for each light and each light with a certification which makes price changes a nightmare as there is no formal price list for the lights with certifications from the manufacturers we represent. It is something we add.

We asked for this 2 years ago and never heard back. This seems like such a basic thing to do in the platform and will help Miva compete better in the marketplace,

I think, maybe I'm wrong, but if you want attributes to have a price and also have some of the attributes variants you need to set the variant pricing model to "controlled by master product" instead of "sum of parts". But yes, then there is no really good way to export the price of the variant product because it's being controlled by the master product attribute. Did that help? ;P

Thanks dreamingdigital. I think that doesn't work because when you setup attributes to have pricing they are not selected as inventory variants so selecting the type of variant pricing model option doesn't really apply as it doesn't get to that point. The attribute pricing is set on the attribute tab and doesn't carry over to inventory variants. Basically we want attributes to have pricing and work with variants that have pricing and have both work together so an option can be added like "Warranty" or "Calibration option" that might have a code but no inventory as they are more services or upgrades to an inventoried product. Does that make sense?

Makes sense. The option to choose on the variant type does not make sense but you need to choose "controlled by the master product" and you'll get what you want. Or closer to what you want. Try it out on a test product.

Just tried it, doesn't work. If you leave the attribute as not inventoried, then it won't show up when selecting the variant pricing options and will not affect price when selecting, and if you do make it inventoried and add it to the product and select "controlled by the master product" the price doesn't change when selected as an option. If you do "specific values" it can force the price, but then it becomes a management nightmare knowing what was set and price changes become very challenging.

I agree on the nitemare part. Sum of Parts solves all that nitemare by being able to easily import and export variant item prices.
What theme is your site using?
Newer themes don't have the javascript price update for when not using variants. You can get this functionality back in a few hours of work though. But adding to cart will have the corrected price on the cart.
