my long time battle swatches on ctgy

I'd really like to see the way I can properly display product swatches on the ctgy page with 10.12
I have done this for many years with what I assume is the hard way causing extra page load time...
I'm guessing car parts can come in different colors too so I was really hoping this was going to be made easier some how.

Also how do you display a product tab conditionally? Not all products have size charts for example...
