Looks like I may be in the market for a new(another) desktop quickly and by frugal means. The one I am looking at is refurbed with a Xeon processor. Any advice or commentary on a refurbed machine with a Xeon?
The Xeon is used in servers more than desktops due to support for ECC and sustained load. It does not have a GPU like the modern i3/5/7, so if you don't have a graphics card, that can be a factor. If the PC was designed with Xeon in mind it is possibly built to be more robust.
I didn't. I ended up replacing the failing hard drive with an SSD. It was a logical place to start. Start with a small part in cost. Turned out to be the better cost effective decision. And drive is very fast.
We've bought a few of the refurbed "business" machines from NewEgg (Dells) and they've performed no worse/better than any new machine we've bought. And were so inexpensive we couldn't build a machine for less.
Just retired the last one a few weeks ago after 4 years of service.
Only caution I'd forward is make sure the box isn't full of one-off ditties, like unique fan shrouds/cooling systems. Can make repair an adventure. Nice thing about business machines and servers is there are people who specialize in salvaged parts.
