we have both USPS and UPS so we just deactived the USPS module so we are at least able to process orders right now.

I had to deactivate the module and deleted the USPS Rules from the CBS - Shipping SuperMod.

Arrggg! Even the morons at the post office should be able to solve the problem if they have all day to do it. I can't believe it's still not working. They probably are clueless about the impact they're causing. It's easy to see how this organization gave birth to the "postal" rampage...

Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better now...

Even worse is the fact that this has occurred the past few years, so they still have not learned how to plan for this month's requirements. On the upside, Linkpoint has not gone down yet as they have the past few Decembers.

            Re: USPS Server down?

You may want to add a Weight based shipping module strictly as a backup when USPS is down. Every site is different and has different shipping needs but I use this as a backup when USPS are down and it works pretty well for small stuff. At the end of the day this table seems to cover all the shipping costs.

            USPS First Class Mail
            Up to 0.5 lbs $3.00

            USPS Domestic Priority Shipping
            Up to 1 lb $5.00
            Up to 2 lb $7.50
            Up to 3 lb $10.00

              Re: USPS Server down?

I reverted back to U.S.P.S. 4.2401 from 4.2406 and the runtime error goes away. However, the previous problem with MIVA charging only the Base Handing Charge recurs. After the customer enters the shipper and buyer info and clicks [CONTINUE] they see U.S.P.S. priority mail $5.45. THey select that and their payment method and click [CONTINUE]. On this page they can see U.S.P.S. Priority Mail $0.65 (my handling fee) instead of keep the amount returned by U.S.P.S. rate server on the previous page. This make me suspect there is a problem with the MIVA USPS shipping module. MIVA released 4.2406 around 11/20/2008 to fix this problem and additionally, the problem of not having USPS show up as an option at all for domestic (USA) shipments. It does not affect International Shipments in either module so the idea of creating a Flat Rate file for USPS Priority Mail USA is a good one but the others should not be necessary.

As for U.S.P.S. working to resolve the problem. The aren't. Calling their customer Care gets you a prerecorded message which is repeated several times while you wait for a representative. The message basically says they (USPS) are aware of the server issues (and specifically mentions APIs) and are working to resolve the problems. The representative answers and tells you their servers are down. You mention MIVA and get, "I can't help you with MIVA issues. The problem is with their software. They issued a fix but we're still getting calls. They (MIVA) are the only ones having problems."

Also, kind of peculiar, MIVA USPS Shipping 4.2401 gives you a place to enter your USPS password. 4.2406 does not.

Gary...thanks, you saved the day. Nice tip, works like a champ!

I assume when USPS comes back up, it will present these three in addition to the normal USPS rates??

You can deactivate weight based shipping once they're back up, so you can easily turn it back on if needed in the future without having to add the rates back into it again.

We've had reports of failures from customers using the Viking USPS module, customers using non-Merchant carts and customers using the Endicia shipping software on their own computers as well.

This thing has to be costing billions in lost revenue.

Yeah, I hear they are next in line for some bailout money, right after GM/Chrysler/Ford are done.

Its affecting USPS Web Tools users as far as I know. That includes the Viking module.
