After having no USPS shipment orders come in all day, I just got one.. I went and placed a sample order -- no USPS choices.

Go figure.

We took advantage of this opportunity to rid the store of the USPS weight based shipping calc. all together. Turns out we can pretty much cover things with the built in weight based shipping mod. One less thing to break.. heh.

The really screwed up thing is I can't even the ship orders that I am getting. Endicia is down too.

Here's the response I got at 10:44pm EST last night:

Dear USPS Customer,

We are currently aware of issue that is affecting multiple products on usps.com, webtools and shipping assistant. The error is being worked on and a correction will be put into place as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, we do not have a time table of when this problem will be fixed and apologize for any inconvenience this is causing you.

At 3am EST, I re-enabled USPS International and Domestic shipping and tried a test order. I was able to get quotes for Priority and Parcel Post services, but no First Class.

At least the servers are starting to work again, no error message when moving to the OSEL page.

What I don't understand is why can't MIVA cart bypass this kind of issue and just continue to checkout with whatever methods ARE available?

This seems like a flaw with the cart itself, doesn't it?

at 8:15 am est I was able to print 4 shipping labels before the USPS site went wacky again. sigh

9 Dec 2008 9:30am EST - Just tested my site and got USPS rates for First Class, Priority and Parcel Post, the three domestic services I offer, so it looks like (at least for these three services) it's working.

10:59 am est. just finished printing the balance of my labels and this is the longest run without going down again...hope it lasts

Well after this I now have rate based tables configured in fallback mode in the CBS Super Shipping Mod so I won't go down again. International customers get a message that says The USPS shipping calculator is currently down we are unable to process your order.

I don't think it's completely fixed yet, we're still seeing plenty of reports of problems.

Yeah I'm doing my shipping. Its hit and miss but it is more up than down right now.

It can...

If you are using a Gateway...it calls the gateway and waits for a response. if the gateway is down...then it moves to the next method...so, its a configuration issue...what to do when the gateway goes down.

There are couple approaches, most of them broached here already...
1) Have a backup method -- Can be switched automatically using SuperShipMod (and yes, this is one feature that should be in there

2) change the default "no shipping methods found" message to say "Shipping will be calculated later...or something" and make sure shipping is not required for checkout.
