  • Sitemap vs Site Map

Back in the dim mists of time, I use to make a site map page on my sites similar to this one

    http://www.lifegardaquatics.com/site-map/

Is there any SEO or other benefit to having a page like this on the site?

  • While an HTML site map can be of value to a user, they usually contain less links than an XML one.

    • I've been told by SEO folks that an HTML site map is completely useless for SEO...and in my book, if your customers need it to navigate your site...you've got bigger problems :)

      • I believe type provides a service the other does not.

The main benefit to a Site Map page, its that sometimes visitors are not able to access, view and/or use dropdown menu that are either long and/or with many multiple subcategories levels due to; Front-End Design, Browser and/or Device limitations. Another problem is poor category page design that contain subcategories listings. Another issue that sometimes depending on the type of merchandise you are looking for, it may not be obvious what category you need to look under. Thus it sometimes helps to step back and look at the big picture. This is especially true with sites that sell parts, collectibles or things people don't ordinarily shop for, that is why having a great site search tool is so important.

The biggest drawback I have with Site Map pages is that most of them are static and therefore are often not updated when a category is added, deleted and/or changed.

Yep, agree. For better user experience, a site map should not be necessary.
