    August 30, 2020 Internet-wide Outages

At approximately 6am EST a global outage occurred on the network of CenturyLink (https://www.centurylink.com/). CenturyLink operates a very large portion of the data circuits that make up the world's global commercial networks. Due to the size of their network, and heavy utilization by both internet access providers and web-based service providers, when they have outages it can affect large parts of the internet. The outage not only prevented normal traffic from being carried across their network, it included a configuration mistake that caused them to continue advertising destinations as reachable through them, when that was not the case.

Traffic to Miva's networks were impacted by this issue due to how many internet providers receive service through CenturyLink. Based on data from https://www.downdetector.com, traffic to nearly every major internet service was degraded in a similar manner. Traffic to and from Cloudflare was similarly degraded, resulting in similar issues for Miva customers utilizing Cloudflare (reference:
    https://www.cloudflarestatus.com/)
As of 11am EST, CenturyLink appears to have the problem nearing resolution. They have not released any information on the outage as of yet.

Miva maintains direct connectivity to numerous internet providers to avoid this type of issue, but unfortunately CenturyLink's global scale resulted in their outage affecting the internet as a whole.

This internet-wide issue also affected Miva's phone systems and staff accessibility. Miva's 24x7 technical assistance center staff are working remotely due to COVID19 and many had internet access issues, including phone failures as they are dependent on reaching Miva's phone system provider via the internet.

We continue to wait for details from CenturyLink, but Cloudflare has released a very detailed analysis of the incident:
