Automatic URI creation

What is the correct configuration to automatically create the URI's for newly added products, categories and products? I must have been sleeping in class when this one was taught.

Under URI Management, you can configure the template Miva will use for each resource and if an URI gets created automatically.

Yes, I figured that much but there are no clear cut examples of how to do that. I'm guess it's a matter of checking each of the "Generate URIs For New" boxes and updating those settings?
