How do I overwrite an Image upload?

I'm sure someone has already asked this question but I'm not finding it when I try to search for it (even via Google). I need to overwrite images that I am uploaded via the Category Tree Tree Image upload field. When I upload an image with the exact same file name I don't get any sort of warning that the file already exists instead the upload "acts" like all is fine, lets me select the image but when I update it's still the old image. Or am I dealing with some sort of internal caching (not browser related).

Why no warning that I'm attempting to upload a file that is already there? And where is the new file?

Interesting revelation for me... Had to test this and it appears image management is now handling these and dividing them into the new partition image system if you've switched. Maybe even if you haven't so my guess is "check for updated images" may have something to do with it?
I tested uploading a different image (same name) and it appears to have renamed it for me to _2 instead of overwriting just like product images do...

So, I'm one of those that just "expected it to work". Yes, I noticed the switch to the Image Management (I thought, wow, this is cool). I then expected it to rename the image since it wasn't asking me if I wanted to overwrite it. Now I have to go find a bunch of "new" settings to make a simple image upload field work?

Can you point me to the documentation for these new settings?

I don't believe it has "new" settings just that image management now has some control. If you FTP an image I imagine you'll have to use the same check for new images in image management just like products. If you upload an image with the same name it's creating a new image but showing you the path directly after uploading it? Did for me at least and I could easily see it had renamed the image to logo_2.jpg and showed the graphic folder path to it.

I just went back and checked it. Today it's displaying the correct image (I had checked it in multiple browsers yesterday). It did put it into a new sub-folder. I never really noticed that it had done that yesterday. Also, it looks like the old images (the ones that are not in the sub-directory) are not displayed in the Image Management. They can be found though, as you mentioned, with the "Add Image Already on Server by Path" method.

I just FTP, overwrite images, and then use Image Management to search for updated images. I am usually doing these in batches so it makes sense. And it saves server space :)

While I agree with the concept, we used to be warned that the image already existed. I try to keep in mind that not every store owner uses FTP and needs to do a quick update via their store admin. I guess since it's not a "bug" I'll have to add it to the beg list.
