Shipping settings - using box size for FedEx only

Our products have attributes that affect the box size. Our local shipping requires weight only to compute the shipping cost. But when using FedEx, the box size affects the FedEx rate. Is there a way for the attribute be factored into shipping? I'm trying to think through this and determine if possible. Attributes have weight, but we don't want to assign a large box size to a product that can use a small or large box.
We want to keep weight based, but somehow be able to pass box size onto the order.

    Hello c3idesign,

I don't know that you can have boxes configured in the store but only have those box sizes sent for 1 shipping module and not other shipping carriers. What other Shipping vendors is your store configured to use other than FedEx?

Currently only FedEx and local shipping, which we have configured ourselves using zip codes.

        Hello c3idesign,

Are you using inventory variants or just plain attributes? If you're using inventory variants, those are essentially inactive products, you can add dimensions to the variant but not to a regular attribute.

Using plain attributes, but I will look into this.

Do the inventory variant dimensions work? I was just experimenting with the dimensions for a variant and it did not seem to make any difference for my FedEx calculations.

Your store is set to Pack by Weight so the product and variant dimensions only come into play when the software determines which Box to use (Shipping Settings -> Boxes). If those variants don't have a weight value, and have price/cost/weight configured as specific values, than the software will always use your fallback dimensions. under Shipping Settings -> Settings -> Fallback Package Dimensions.

Do your variants have a weight value? How are variants configured for price/cost/weight, Sum of Parts, Specific Values, or Controlled by Master Product?

Thanks for the reply Jim. All variants do have a weight value and dimensions configured. I do have most products that have variants set up to use "specific values" for price/cost/weight, the new one that I am testing I have setup to use "SUM OF PARTS". None of them seem to change the FedEx rate, which I believe should change due to an increase in weight and dimensions. What happens if a variant dimension is larger than the largets box configured?
