    Newly Exempt Customers

When clicking the "Tax Exempt" checkbox on a customer's account in Miva's backend, the customer doesn't seem to be instantly tax exempted. When I use the "shop as customer" feature and I share the session, the tax is still showing up. If I create a new session, the tax is gone.

Our issue is that I recently moved over from a third party module to Miva's native tax exempt functionality. A lot of our tax exempt customers have baskets built and waiting to checkout. When they go to checkout they don't notice that tax is being charged. Accounting is hounding me to fix this issue.

Does anyone have any insights? I would like to nail down, if the customer simply needs to log out and back in or if their shopping basket needs to be deleted. Once I figure that out, then I need to figure out how I can perform this action for each of our exempt customers, hopefully there is an API call available that will allow me to write a quick program.

I have a customer that allows multiple employees from different computers. We had them go through the process of logging out and then logging back in, but somehow they are still placing orders with tax. When I use the "shop as customer" feature, the tax isn't charged. Any ideas on what is going on?

We did some testing of Miva's tax exempt feature and also had a similar issue where it was not suppressing tax for appropriate customers. Evidently if the B2B Tax Exempt module is still active it will "overwrite" the Miva functionality and cause it not work. Thanks for the reply. I did move from the B2B Tax Exempt module to the Miva native tax exempt feature. The module is no longer installed though, so I don't think that is my problem.

Did you successfully move to Miva's native tax exempt feature?

No, I decided to stay with the B2B Tax Exempt module since it was already set up and running correctly. I would eventually like to move to Miva's solution so that everything happens natively, so I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Yeah, the B2B Tax Exempt module was working fine for us too. I plan to move to Avalara's tax module soon and I thought it would be a good idea get rid of the B2B Tax Exempt module first to make sure that it did not break Avalara's module. I was not expecting to have trouble with the Miva's native tax exempt feature.

TipPro what Tax module are you using. If it is Avatax or TaxJar they have their own tax exempt settings completely separate from the Tax Exempt flag at the customer record. Where are you setting the customer to be TaxExempt.

But we do have a TaxExempt flag at the basket level so if you changed a customer to be tax exempt (or vise versa) they would need have the basket expire and deleted before the tax exempt flag would take effect. What is your current basket timeout?

                Thanks for responding Brennan,

I am not using Avatax yet. I do not have any tax modules installed at this time.

Yes, the basket expiring is my likely issue. I have a pretty long expire time on my baskets because customers take a long time to order sometimes.

Is there an API call that I can expire & delete baskets of specific customers?

Brennan Can I expire a basket manually through Miva's backend?

I thought shopping as the customer and creating a new session would do this, but it might not.

We are having an issue with one particular customer who shares their log in among multiple employees. Could each employee potentially have a basket open? I would assume a customer account could only have one basket at a time.

Yes, you can use the Review Baskets feature in Miva to view and delete individual baskets:
