Native Rewards module - Discount instead of payment?

Back in 2021, Brennan wrote below about reward points as discount.
Has there be any update on this?

We're looking into options here to make the points redeem as a discount on the order vs a payment method which would help solve this and other use cases where having them be a payment method could be problematic.
