Best practice for splitting a large Sitemap into multiple sitemaps with Templates

I'm working on a Miva 26.01.03 store with approximately 45,000–50,000 active products.
I'm currently using a Template Based Feed to generate my sitemap because I wanted to include product images using Google's Image Sitemap extension. It's working well so far.
As the catalog continues to grow, I'd like to split the sitemap into multiple files before approaching the 50,000 URL / 50 MB limits.
My questions are:
My goal is to stay as close as possible to Miva best practices while keeping the sitemap fully automated.

- Is there a supported way in Miva to generate a sitemap index (sitemap.xml) that references multiple product sitemap files (for example sitemap-products-1.xml, sitemap-products-2.xml, etc.)?
- Does Template Based Feed support any type of pagination, record offset, or record limit that would allow splitting a product feed into multiple sitemap files without maintaining multiple manually filtered feeds?
- If not, is there a recommended way to override or extend the built-in Standard Sitemap Protocol Feed so it can generate multiple sitemap files while still remaining upgrade-safe?
- Has anyone implemented automatic sitemap splitting for larger catalogs, and if so, what approach did you use?
