At the end of the day a layout is just a special type of Page. We set it up so you're able to create your own layouts (as starting points) for your specific needs. Over time we will add more an more default layouts to choose from to target different types of pages such as content pages.
lesliekirk if you need a layout that has the category tree, I would go into User Interface -> Layouts and copy one of the existing layouts and add the Category Tree item to it. You can then re-use this layout over and over as a starting point. As for the base readytheme, are there things that are borken or don't look right on when creating a new pagebuilder page?
Any suggestions for the type of layouts that would be most useful for us to add?

I second this. Currently I just take a copy of an existing page, paste it into a new blank layout, assign all of the items. From there I can go on with the template and page build adjusting to suit me. When there are many pages to do at once, it can get very time consuming just to ready the templates!

Need A Default Template
I was working with a store using the Base (Bootstrap) layout and created a page using the Content Management > Create Page Blank Layout option. The Blank option uses the Global Header and Global Footer. It even attempts to adjust the CSS for the various ReadyThemes. It would be nice to be able to choose a "template layout" - a page that has the site layout pre-defined in it. One that might have a cat tree or some other element that is used on every page of the layout.
Also, the Blank option seems to have forgotten about the Base ReadyTheme.Tags: None
