Looking for Retail POS/Miva Web Order System

Can anyone suggest a retail POS/inventory/web order system all in one that will work nicely with Miva Merchant v4.16? I've been talking with Stone Edge Software, but after much time spent, ultimately found out they don't currently support a display pole or debit pin pads, and their hardware requirements are restricted. Would appreciate a suggestion that is working nicely for someone else with their retail/web/phone order sales.

    Thanks! Tricia @ secretslingerie.net

Not sure who you spoke with Tricia, but it sounds like you did not get the full details on the Order Manager. We are releasing a completely new Point of Sale system at the end of this month which will support the following hardware:

    pole display
    pin pad
    card reader
    barcode scanner
    cash drawer
    receipt printer

We also hope to add check readers and additional hardware as needed by our users (scales, etc.). Keep in mind that the hardware we recommend on our sales site is not an exclusive list of hardware that we work with - it is only meant as a recommendation because we know of, have used and have users that work with these products. Hardware considerations for use with the Order Manager are as follows:

Pole Display - Logic Controls LD9000 or other pole display that uses serial port communications and supports up to 2 lines of text (user can define the number of characters per line).

Scanner - any barcode scanner that can be recognized by the PC as keyboard input and can be programmed with a three character prefix and a single character suffix.

Card Reader - any reader that can be recognized by the PC as keyboard input that can be programmed with a one to three prefix characters and a single suffix character per card track. We already work with Cherry Keyboards and MagTek card readers.

PinPad - this is a new addition and will initially support the Verifone 1000SE, however, we do intend to expand our hardware offerings once the system is in release.

receipt printer - any printer should work with the program. The issue of printer type falls on the various receipt reports built into the Order Manager. The system supports both full page (8-1/2 X 11) receipts or 3 inch receipts from printers like the Epson TMIII. If you decide to use another printer that uses a different paper size, we can easily configure a custom invoice to meet your needs.

cash drawer - most drawers today are triggered by the receipt printer. The triggering mechanism is either configured in the printer's driver or sent as a special character in the report to be printed (which is supported in the Order Manager). We also support drawers that are triggered by .bat or .exe (executable) files on the PC, so you are free to use any type that uses one of the above methods to open.

Based on this list, the only hardware item that is limited is the PinPad. This is only due to the fact that it is a new addition to the system and we don't have a great deal of experience with other PinPads on the market. As the new Point of Sale is put into use, I'm sure we will expand the flexibility for this hardware item as well. If you should have additional questions or wish to see the system as we put in the final touches prior to release, feel free to contact me directly.

Will the POS "system" work as an application independant of Order Manager ?
We use Shipworks and won't be switching away from that.

imho this looks like something that Miva should build

It would be possible to use the Order Manager for your POS system, and still use Shipworks for printing your shipping labels. I know of at least one Miva merchant who uses OM for inventory tracking, etc., but uses Shipworks to print his shipping labels. I'm not sure how much sense it makes, especially as we add more and more shipping capabilities to the Order Manager, but there is no reason you cannot do it.

As for Miva writing their own POS system, I would not hold my breath waiting for that.

BTW - I checked out the latest POS system for Order Manager and it's unbelievable. It's definitely worth the consideration!
