Add custom payment method

Is there a way to add a new payment method to the payment settings? I'd like to add a "mail order" option but do not see a link for adding new payment methods.

My goal is to allow the user to go through the existing basket and customer information pages and then select "order by mail" as a payment option and if selected I can provide them a printable page with all their information on it which they then mail in.

Wouldn't it be better to just have a "Pay By Check" selection?

I had always thought the "check payment" setting was for electronic checks. After your post I looked at it again in support docs and now I feel pretty silly.

Thanks for pointing this out to me. Got to read those docs more often.

I think there is a module out there you can use for taking electronic checks through Miva, but I don't think it is very commonplace.

also, check iwth your bank, but I am about 90% sure that taking a personal check is MUCH safer than taking a money order / certified check.

With the new banking systems, personal checks really only take two days to clear.

But money orders / bank checks are often much easier to counterfeit. There are many horror stories out there about people who have accepted them, waited two weeks for them to "clear," and two MONTHS LATER have their bank take out the funds from their account, because they turned out to be fake.

This was even after their bank told them that the money order / bank check had "cleared."

Talk with your bank about it fist though, because things might have changed.

Also, think twice about accepting CODs. I once (many years ago) sent out an $800 order to someone by UPS who paid COD. The money order was a fake (our bank caught it right away). Unfortunately, UPS won't take any liability for counterfeit payment.

Really, you could require that they pay your COD in cash, and if the customer paid the UPS driver in Monopoly Money, UPS wouldn't reimburse you.

Good points about accepting checks. We've been doing it offline and haven't been burned so far but will all the scams out there you can't be too carefull.

I went through a test order using the "check payment" option and still have one question. Can I direct the customer to a custom page when they select the "check payment" option rather than the standard "invc" page? Not sure how I could do that.

I think it would be a good idea to keep the regular invoice page and have a Header that appears with insturctions that is conditional upon the payment type being check.

You might want to create a separate thread in this forum asking "how to determine the type of payment method on the invoice page" and see what some people suggest.
