Problems opening .dat in Excel?

We have recently had problems opening our products.dat file in excel (2003).
It has always worked in the past. But now it completely shuts down our system. We have to open the .dat file in notepad, convert to .txt and open in excel.

Is anyone else having trouble?

haven't noticed myself, but how are you opening? Are you opening excel first and then using the import function? Or are you left-clicking the file and then using the Open With... Excel menu from explorer?

Opening Excel and then "File", "Open", change file format to any.
