According to a notice we received from Discover, they now require a 3-digit CVV number for every credit card transaction. If there is a dispute, and the merchant is unable to provide the CVV, the charges will be automatically reversed. We process credit cards offline, using simple validation. Can you add a field to the online order form for the CVV? Otherwise, we will need to stop accepting Discover cards.

Re: Discover Card CVV requirements
That's silly talk. You always have the option to switch to a real-time payment gateway, instead, to accept CVV2 codes and pass them to the processor in real time. Doing manual work by hand-entering credit card numbers in 2011 is so 1999... ;-) It's time to move on and use something more secure and more automated.Originally posted by pixlfixr View PostOtherwise, we will need to stop accepting Discover cards.Last edited by d_host; 04-26-11, 07:50 AM.

Re: Discover Card CVV requirements
Sorry for trying to be helpful.
Your business model may work for you, but it's not keeping up with the times. The CVV2 code is not meant to be manually captured and entered in your terminal. It's meant to be transmitted directly to the payment processor and the only thing you, as a merchant, are supposed to see is either a "MATCH" or "NO MATCH" response - not see the actual CVV2 code itself. Check your merchant account agreement - it's almost guaranteed to be written in there somewhere that you are not allowed to capture the CVV2 code for manual processing like you envision. Not trying to be "snarky" - just trying to point out to you the 1999 method of processing credit cards is not keeping up with the security requirements imposed by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, Amex, etc. Things change, security requirements change, you have to catch up with the rest of the world at some point.

Re: Discover Card CVV requirements
Your agreement with Discover is for "card not present" transactions, right? No "card not present" transaction should have the access to the CVV2 code once the transaction has been completed.Originally posted by pixlfixr View PostAccording to a notice we received from Discover, they now require a 3-digit CVV number for every credit card transaction. Re: Discover Card CVV requirements
I did this dance with Discover a few years ago when I had a chargeback that I had proof of delivery (customers sig), delivery address matched the customer on file and the IP matched the delivery city.
Discover sided with the customer because we did NOT collect the CVV number. I called them to explain why we didn't collect that number and their response was something like, We are not operating under the same rules as the other cards, we are not part of the banking system and you will need to call each Discover customer and request the number from them to protect yourself or set your site up to collect the CVV with a note that it's for Discover only.
My response was, or we could drop Discover, which is what we did.
I still use simple validation as most orders from NY have to be adjusted to meet their weird sales tax requirements. Some items at one rate others at another rate and shipping sales tax based on the items ordered.

Re: Discover Card CVV requirements
For those whose "business" model relies on Simple Validation, i recommend checking out the options of using PayPal.
1) its real time, but I do believe they offer a method of adjusting the price later on for various reasons.
2) Better protection for you AND your customers. Charge backs are actually (at least in my experience) investigated and adjudicated fairly.
3) Better security for you AND your customers.
4) The rate is compatible or better than what you get with "card not present" transactions using Simple Validation.Bruce Golub
