Another item if you go to utilities on the left menu you can enable the image management module. This will give you a new item under the utilities menu and clicking the image management tool might be helpful.

Re: PR8 Image Machine Pros & Cons

Thanks Mark. Your info was very helpful. Two new images were in fact created by the imagemachine (in the same directory) for the one item for which I uploaded the Full-sized Image path to the Additional Images Tab on the Products page in admin. One had a suffix of _150x150 and the other _274x274. When I visited that particular item from my mobile phone and tapped the photo for image enlargement, I guess the _274x274 was auto generated. Since no Full-sized Image paths were uploaded to the Additional Images Tab for any other products, no other new images were created when visiting other items via a mobile phone. The mobile version simply relies on the Legacy Fallback Thumbnail Image.

So I guess I just need to decide if I want to carry around the extra baggage of additional image files (maintenance, additional storage costs, etc) to have the image enlargement feature on the mobile version.

Is it possible to specify a default directory for all these new images to be placed? That way, one could easily empty it out if things get out of hand and disk space starts to sprial out of control.

I do not believe there currently is however the image management tool under utilities solves this. It can delete them all at once including images for old products. Basically if you deleted a product you could then go the image management and delete the images for it simply by deleting the unreferenced or at least that is my understanding.

I gave that a look and from what I saw it only lists the legacy image that the on-the-fly images were created from, not the _150x150 and _274x274 images. So I don't think they can be removed with the tool.

I stand corrected, Mark was right on target again. In the image management tool under utilities, there is a 'Delete Resized' button that will remove the on-the-fly images from whatever directory they reside in for each product. The next time the product is viewed on a mobile device they will be auto-regenerated again.

I also tested deleting the resized images from the directory myself via FTP. Not a good idea. The images were unable to regenerate when I visited that product again on a mobile device. It basically just showed an missing image graphic and did not even resort to the legacy thumbnail.
