What's the difference between Product Code and Product SKU?

I'm switching to Miva 5 from 4 and I see there's a new piece of data, Product SKU.

I don't understand how this is different from the Product Code? How do I use this new field?

    Thank you,

    Tom

SKU's are normally associated with in-house identification and used as barcodes. For example when you walk into a store like Home Depot you may see two barcodes on a product. One is the manufactures barcode and the second is Home Depots SKU barcode so they can control their inventory. UPC Barcode's used by the manufacture are globaly registered so they can not be duplicated. The SKU barcode's are not registered, they are created by a business and intended for use by that business only.

Gary, that's a great answer. And it might also be beneficial to those who are struggling with the new Google Merchant feeds.

As a side note, the QR and DataMatrix codes are becoming very popular. You can find generators for these codes by searching Google. You just type in a url and it produces the barcode. For example:
        index.png
If you can't see the image just click.

People everywhere are downloading free apps for their smart phones that can read these codes. You can place the codes on fliers, brochures, any printed advertizing material and by pointing your phone at it you are directed to the website. I even saw one on a 'house for sale' sign in the front yard of the home.

I guess most people are aware of this by now but I still think it's cool.
