PayPal Express Checkout: Benefits And Drawbacks

    Hi there, Everyone:does anyone

have experience with payPal Express checkout? Are there benefits or drawbacks to it?

Are there any shipping / coupon module incompatibilities that I should know about? I am using the emporiumplus.com coupon redemption module, emporiumplus SortShipping Plus Free Shipping, and the Copernicus Shipping super Mod.

    Thanks in advance.

I know of sites using it - just don't have any input for you

Use it on four sites. Two running MM5.5, two running MM4.X.

Works fine. No problems. Ditch the PayPal buttons and let the customer select paypal from the payment/shipping screen and you will be far enough along in the process to bypass any potential compatibility issues. By default, there is a Pay with PayPal button on the shopping cart page and every page during the checkout process that takes them to PayPal to finish checkout. This was something we immediately got rid of. We have better rates through our merchant account than what we get from PayPal, so we want to offer PayPal but not encourage it. Also, I can't count how many times customers still had a previous "confirmed" address on PayPal that would have resulted in a returned package had we not made them fill out their address info on our site rather than pulling it in from PayPal.

I should mention that the sites I know that use PayPal Express are using it in addition to having PayPal in the drop down choices on the Shipping/Payment select screen pretty much because PayPal contacted them offering a better rate if they used it.

            Thanks for the input.

Just out of curiosity, isn't the point of PayPal express was to bypass the whole customer information / shipping screens and just go directly to the PayPal payment screen???

We have better rates through our merchant account than what we get from PayPal...
Aye, there's the rub... PayPal rates are MUCH higher than my processors rates.

On the other hand, my processor will often make my life difficult in other ways...

Re: PayPal Express Checkout: Benefits And Drawbacks

The way PayPal Express works on our sites is:
              1. The button is located on the BASK page.
              2. Clicking it takes the customer to PayPal login
              3. Customer logs in to PayPay then continues back to our OCST page with their PayPal address info
              4. Customer then proceeds thru our checkout pages to INVC.

Thus the comment by jsisk about an confirmed obsolete PayPal address being given to OCST in checkout.

We use this on our mobile sites as a help to complete OCST for those with slow/fat thumbs. Probably not necessary?

                Thanks Larry!!!

So is that the only benefit to PayPal express? that you can get the customer info from their paypal account instead of having them type it in?

That's how it works for us. Maybe there's a better way but I don't know how the order could be completed thru Miva any other way.
Can anyone else chime in on this?

                  Regards, Larry

Re: PayPal Express Checkout: Benefits And Drawbacks

We offer PayPal because some people feel more comfortable using PayPal rather than disclosing their credit card number. Same reason why I pay with PayPal when I can. Too many websites have the "save credit card number for future orders" option on their website. If I am making a one-time purchase, I use PayPal or buy on Amazon to prevent my credit card number from being on yet another server somewhere.

As for the convenience of not having to type in your billing and shipping address on our site...

It is not convenient for the customer to have their package sent to the wrong address because they didn't update it in PayPal.
I have heard of people abandoning their cart because they weren't comfortable sharing their credit card number, but I have never heard of someone doing it because they had to tell us where to ship their order.

We tried Google Checkout and Amazon Checkout and dumped them both because they both hijack your customer and one, if not both, even hide their email address (and substitute some message system email that goes through them) for future marketing purposes. (can't remember which one or both)

So we do it just like we have for the last 10 years on our Miva 4.X websites. PayPal is an option on the credit card drop-down menu on the payment screen only. (to accomplish this, we just unassign the PayPal Express button from the checkout screens under items)

The nice part about the Miva 5 version of the PayPal module is that:
                    1) We are able to create custom landing pages with our logo for each of our websites that share the same PayPal account.
                    2) The PayPal transaction info shows up on the admin Order Summary that we print out.
                    3) The PayPal fees are listed on the Order Summary so it is easier to post them in our POS/Accounting system

Re: PayPal Express Checkout: Benefits And Drawbacks

We use the PayPal Express option and we are getting a handful of complaints about it being "clunky."

                      For example, one customer wrote:

"I do have one complaint with your checkout. I’ve used the paypal checkout out twice and each time it was very clunky. I had to enter the paypal info and then select shipping and then go back and enter the paypal info a second time to reflect the shipping amount. Otherwise your site asks for my credit card info just before final order placement. "

I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but if you use the PayPal Express button, you leave your site, go to PayPal, come back to your site, then some people don't really know what to do to actually complete their order.

For us, Paypal is vital. Our sales go about 50/50 perhaps even leaning a wee bit more to the Paypal side. Our rates dropped some based on the new setup, yet i am not exactly sure what that number is off the top of my head.

This sounds like a set up problem to me? This would certainly take the express out of express checkout.

If that's the case you would probably be better off using regular paypal from the shipping payment screen.

I would agree... We use the button setup, they click it, they go to Paypal and complete there order, no bouncing around.

Client wants to use PayPal express on his mobile sites and skip the entire checkout process. I'm just not sure how to add the flat rate shipping cost. Any hints how to handle shipping when the customer clicks the link on the basket page?
