Is it possible to have two instances of the Image Machine?

I'm having all sorts of issues trying to get the Image Machine to do what I want it to do. I got the Attribute Swatch - Drop-down to work like I wanted it after having to assign an additional image to over 250 Inventory Variant products. Now I'd like to be able to have a couple of Additional Images with the Master Product, but when I do that things get very squirrelly. The Inventory Variant image that is tied to the Attribute Swatch - Drop-down won't initially display in the id=main_image but it creates a thumbnail under the main image (I don't want it creating that thumbnail). To get the Additional Image to display in the id=main_image you have to click on the thumbnail that is created. You can see what I'm struggling with here

I've tried using the tips Brennan posted to use Image Custom Fields hoping that if I did I could get the Attribute Swatch images to swap out in it, but the Image Machine needs the id=main_image to swap out.

Then another problem I've discovered is that if I use the image type code for the master product additional image - it shows that image in the actual size - it's not using the Image Machine to size it down.

So with all that said - is it possible to have to separate instances of the Image Machine on one page? What I'm trying to achieve is to be able to display the Master Product image with it's additional images in one div tag AND display the Inventory Variant image in a second div tag AND not have an Image Machine thumbnail created for the Inventory Variant images.

Am I trying to push the envelop too far or am I just not doing it right?

I think you can achieve what you are after if you set the image types.

On the master product add one more image, doesn’t matter what it is because it will never be seen. When you upload it give it an “image type” such as “type_1”.

You can add image types under, Products> Image Types> add type.

Edit the display order so that they “type_1” image is displayed first.

Now for each product variant add the image type “type_1” to the image for that variant.

When the customer selects that variant, by dropdown or swatch, all the images with the same type will replace each other.

If that image type is the first to be displayed on the master product then it will be the one displayed as the main.

You will still see a thumbnail version of it, that is there so you can view the image again if you select one of the other images.

Let me know if that helps

I think I've figured out a work around - the "default" image for the Master product can't be an Additional image - but that also means I can't have multiple images for the Master product. But for now, it will have to do.
