Parent and Sub Category Menu Tree Structure

I have a category page where, when on a Parent Category page, it shows thumbnails of the sub categories in the content area. Clicking on any image representing the sub category will show the all of the products assigned to that sub category.

With the default MIVA Category Tree Menu, clicking on a parent category opens the menu to display the subcategory items in the menu. I would like to keep the menu collapsed while the parent category is active. Remember, the user still sees all the images representing the subcats in the content area, so there is a way to navigate to these even thought tree would be collapsed. When showing the sub category items, however, the sub menu for the category would be active.

The MIVA Category Tree is beautifully simple and this may be part of my issue. Maybe it's a left-handed thing. Either way, I cannot figure out how to plan the function without effecting all of the other menu options, both parent and sub category. I've been getting a little better at writing if and else statements within MIVA using ToolKit, but I don't seem to be choosing the right type of element to be able to say, "If the parent category is what's active, don't show the sub categories."

Any advice on where to start would be most appreciated. If the above isn't clear, I could post 2 images to illustrate what I'm after.
